A Wrinkle in Time
The trailer for Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time has just been released and I think this might be the first Disney movie in some years that I’m actually excited to see. Production was announced early last year as DuVernay was receiving critical acclaim for her documentary 13th (2016), a must watch if you have Netflix.
Based on the highly popular novel, A Wrinkle in Time is not just exciting because of its built in fan base, but also because of its cast including talent such as Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (who blew me away on Netflix's Black Mirror), Oprah Winfrey, and Storm Reid. The diversity is also what attracts me, along with DuVernay herself.
She began as a film marketer and distributor before becoming a director. Stating in interviews how much joy she took in seeing others make their imaginative stories come to life. This eventually prompted her to begin creating her own stories. Duvernay is not only accomplished in film, but also television with her highly acclaimed show Queen Sugar (2016) premiering to rave reviews last year on OWN network. It is unique in that it is an all female-directed series, an intention DuVernay made clear from the start in recruiting the best of the best of filmmakers who are women. Much like showrunner Jill Soloway began doing with her series Transparent a couple years ago by hiring an all cast/crew of transgender people.
All in all, I have to say I like this new trend of allowing more space for up-and-coming filmmakers to showcase their creativity. Whether it be a huge Hollywood film or a smaller series on Amazon or Netflix, it’s refreshing to say the least. Catch A Wrinkle in Time on March 9th.
