Modern Day Pop Meets 90s Grunge: Charly Bliss

Brooklyn-based band Charly Bliss takes us back to the 90s with their imaginative ode to childhood in the video for their single, Black Hole. Their debut album Guppy was released in April but stellar guitar riffs and nostalgia have beckoned repeated listenings. This album reminds me of a time when screens and monitors did not rule over us as social media overlords. Their sound combines perfectly the elements of grunge, rock, and pop.

Lead vocalist Eva Hendricks has a voice reminiscent of Nina Persson of The Cardigans infused with the angst of Sleater-Kinney, whom they opened for in the past. Tracks like Scare U sound the way a crush feels. Aggressively sweet lyrics lace other tracks such as Percolator. The more advanced technology becomes, the more I seem to long for bands like this. Maybe because I’m a 90s baby, or maybe because times seemed simpler and more meaningful back then. Instead of a hashtag or heart emoji, you would write someone a song or make them an actual mixtape. You would sit in a room alone with your guitar and pour your heart out because it felt like you had no choice but to scream how you really feel. I thank Charly Bliss for reminding us of this.
