The Jazz Influence of South East London
Jamie Isaac, a native of south east London, has been creating a fusion of jazz and trip hop in his bedroom for some years now. The music scene there has sprouted other impressive acts such as King Krule. But Isaac’s sound is something special. Although similar to King Krule, which is inevitable when collaborating for so long, Isaac has cited his influences as being more of a mix of classic jazz such as Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, and Teddy Wilson.
On top of being an immensely talented piano player and singer, he also writes and produces all of his own music. Anxiety has been the fuel for many of his live performances, which is understandable with the sometimes quiet bedroom-studio persona he portrays in interviews.
His music is a characterization of romance with the beats obtaining an eclectic mix of blues, hip hop, and jazz. He has noted south east London as having a communal feel. One that warrants a collective energy that is important for any artist trying to foster their voice, whether it be in music or any other medium. Isaac has recently re-released his LP Couch Baby, with new remixes of some of his earlier work and I can’t wait to hear more from him.
